Allergy Products That Could Be Life Savers

Those of us who have allergies or who have family members with severe allergies probably know that in some cases allergic reactions could be life threatening. Allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis are known to be sudden, severe and deadly. These reactions include drop in blood pressure, swelling of the throat, inability to breathe etc.

Anaphylaxis could be triggered by certain foods, insect bites and even some medications. This is why those with allergies can never be too careful – some of the products described here could well end up being a literal lifesaver!

Products to improve indoor air quality

Allergy-ProductsIn most cases of severe allergies, improving the indoor air quality to reduce allergens such as dust mites, mold, pollen and pet dander is known to improve quality of life. A powerful vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filtration systemused regularly all over the house could make a significant difference.

Apart from the main vacuum cleaner it may be a good idea to have a smaller, portable one about the home or the car that can help clean up small messes and spills quickly and efficiently.

A humidifier can also help many allergy sufferers if their condition is soothed by moist air. However an air conditioner can also improve the air quality by drying the air which other allergy sufferers may find beneficial.

An air cleaning or air washing unit may also be a wise investment for allergy sufferers. Place this in the room that you spend the most time in. Again; pick one that has a HEPA filter.

The rescue medication kit

You can consult with your allergist to determine what medications you should have within reach at all times. You can discuss what antihistamines and or corticosteroids can be used in your particular case and your type of allergies.  Nebulized salbutamol is seen to be effective for bronchospasm and Methylene blue is seen to be effective in relaxing smooth muscle. So discuss what medication you should have at hand and what dosage you would need to take in case of a severe reaction.

The EpiPen

This is the name used for the epinephrine auto injector that can help people revive from anaphylactic shock brought on by a severe allergic reaction. This delivers a shot of adrenaline quickly to the allergy sufferer. The EpiPen is available in adult as well as pediatric doses. These are available over the counter but it is best to consult with a doctor about brand and dosage specifications.
