There’s actually no diet that has the power to cure or eliminate asthma, but there are certain types of foods which can help people having asthma. Also keeping in mind that certain bodies have different reactions to some food, but here are some guidelines on what not to eat and what to eat to help get through this medical condition.
Foods to Eat:
- Apple: As the saying goes, “an apple a day, keeps the doctor away”, an apple does help in helping through many types of medical conditions. According to a British study, people who ate 3 to 5 apples a week had 32 % lower risk of asthma than the people who ate less than that. Speculations suggest that the beneficial compounds known as flavonoids present in apples may be responsible for it. A flavonoid, in particular, Khellin has shown the properties to open up airways in a human body.
- Cantaloupe: Vitamin C present in Cantaloupe helps with lung damage by fighting free radicals. Vitamin C can also be found in many fruits and vegetables, like orange, kiwi fruit, Brussels sprouts, broccoli and tomatoes.
- Carrots: Carrots contain beta-carotene, which is antioxidant and gets converted into vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A reduces the incidence of exercise induced asthma. It also keeps your eyes and immune system in good shape, and helps with cancer, heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease.
- Coffee: Coffee improves airway function for up to 4 hours after it is consumed. Caffeine might have faced some doubts regarding if it affects positively or negatively to your health but in case of asthma, it does helps.
Foods not to Eat:
- Eggs: Egg allergy causes skin reactions that are common, but asthma is another possible reaction to it. Egg allergy is most common in children and many of them continue to have it in their lives. If you or your child has had such allergy, you need to avoid eggs and egg products. Eggs make asthma worse. Stay away from them.
- Peanuts: Peanuts are known to provoke fatal allergic reactions in few people. One study shows that asthma patients who had peanut allergy, they seemed to develop asthma earlier than the people without this allergy. Most of the people having peanut allergy also have allergic reactions to weeds, grass dust mites, cats and tree pollen.
The key is to pay attention to your body and what it is allergic to. Stay away from the foods which cause allergic reactions in your body, along with the above-mentioned diet and it would be helpful for your asthma.
