As readers are probably aware, asthma can lead to complications which can, in grave cases lead to the death of the sufferer.
However, what is shocking is that black male deaths resulting from asthma are six times the number of their white counterparts and it is estimated that this is matched by numbers relating to asthma in rural areas.
It has been seen that a number of factors that complicate matters cause asthma related deaths. These can include poor housing quality, higher degrees of air pollution, less accessibility (economic as well as that caused by distance) to doctors and smaller, less well-equipped hospitals.
Another factor that could further complicate the problem could be smoking, or second hand smoke. One more factor that affects how asthma can cause complications is the fact that there is laxity in carrying inhalers or taking proper medications.
For these reasons, researchers have identified the areas that need to be addressed in terms of asthma control and have come up with Puff City, a culturally-tailored intervention program aimed at three key areas:
- The program looks to reduce tobacco exposure.
- The program also seeks to have individuals adhere better to their medications and do’s and don’ts.
- The program seeks to make sure that asthma sufferers are attack ready, so that they know exactly what to do in the case of an asthma attacks being triggered.
