Top 10 Foods that Cause 90% of Food Allergies
Posted on Jul 06, 2009 | Comments 1
Each year, millions of Americans have allergic reactions to food.
Although most food allergies cause relatively mild and minor symptoms, some food allergies can cause severe reactions, and may even be life-threatening.
While more than 160 foods can cause allergic reactions in people with food allergies, ninety percent of all food allergies are caused by about 10 foods.
Among the most common allergy-causing foods are fish and fruit. And the culprits within the foods, the “things” that cause allergic reactions are proteins. In fish allergy the protein responsible is parvalbumin and in fruit it is lipid transfer protein (LTP).
Top 10 most allergy-causing foods are:
- Milk
- Eggs
- Peanuts
- Tree nuts (walnuts, cashews, etc)
- Fish
- Shellfish
- Soy
- Wheat
- Tomatoes
- Corn
In highly allergic people, even minuscule amounts of a food allergen (for example, 1/44,000 of a peanut kernel) can evoke an allergic reaction.
Less sensitive people, however, may be able to tolerate small amounts of a food to which they are allergic.
