According to the studies among pet allergies, cat allergies occur twice as frequent as dog allergies.

Pets give you joy and companionship; they also require attention, training, love, care, and even patience. Patience is especially necessary when you are allergic to his/ her companion.

15 percent of the population is allergic to dogs and cats. It is very surprising to know that one third of the Americans how have pet allergies are living with at least one cat in their house.

Pet allergies are mainly due to the protein from the hair, saliva or urine of household pets. They cause the allergic reaction that attacks your eyes and the airways. Hay fever, asthma symptoms, atopic dermatitis, or a nettle rash are also the symptoms of pet allergies.

Not only cats and dogs but also rats, pet birds, horses, cows, mice, and guinea pigs can also trigger allergic reactions.

Pet allergies are due to the protein which when you comes in contact with your skin or breathed in cause an allergic reaction. This provokes your body to produce chemicals called histamines.

These chemicals can cause swelling and irritation of the upper airways and causes hay fever and asthmatic symptoms.

Hereditary is also an important cause of allergic reactions. If you have had bronchial asthma and your children grow in an environments with pets, especially a cat are at high risk of developing allergies towards cats as they get older.

Symptoms of pet allergies:

Asthma – Causes coughing and wheezing

Eye symptoms – Such as itching and watering eyes

Hay fever – Called as seasonal allergic rhinitis and causes sneezing, running and blocked nose

Nettle rash – Skin rashes in red color and causes itchiness

The symptoms of pet allergies may even worsen with polluted air, tobacco smoke, and car fumes. Some environmental allergens like pollen, mold, dust, etc.

In order to come out from the symptoms of pet allergies the best advice is go for pets that don’t have hair or fur, shed dander, or produce excrement that creates allergic problems.

Managing pet allergies:

  • If you don’t want to remove the pet from your house, it should at least be kept outside of your bedroom and if possible outdoors.
  • If you are allergic then you should not hug or kiss your pets because of the allergens on the pet’s fur or saliva.
  • Restrict your pet only to few rooms in the home as possible.
  • The use of heating and air conditioners and HEPA filters as well as vacuum cleaners to vacuum your carpets, cleansing walls and washing the pet with water always reduce your exposure to allergens.
  • You can also use allergy shots to reduce pet allergies particularly when you don’t want to avoid your pet. It is recommended in case of cat and dog allergies. These shots can be given at least three years to decrease the symptoms allergy and asthma.
