Let’s look at the diagnosis and treatment of Rhinitis:
Diagnosis of Rhinitis or Hay Fever
The way to diagnose Rhinitis is through the description of your symptoms. The following are a few methods
- Allergy Testing
Your doctor will ask you to go for allergy testing if you have symptoms all year round. This is also the case when you are not responding to treatment. There are two allergy tests which are mainly conducted and they are blood tests and skin prick tests.
In a skin prick test, your doctor will place one of the possible allergens on your arm and prick the surface of your skin with a needle. If you are allergic to that particular allergen, then there will be a reaction. In the case of a blood test, the doctor will take a sample of your blood from your vein and will send it for a test that will detect the presence of Immunoglobulin E (lGE) antibody. If the test is positive this means that you hay fever or Rhinitis.
Treatment of Rhinitis or Hay Fever
The following are some of the treatment methods of Rhinitis:
Antihistamines block the action of histamine, which is a chemical that may cause hay fever. Thus this helps in the treatment of this disease. Antihistamines are effective in treating the symptoms of Rhinitis such as sneezing, watery eyes and irritation.
- Nasal Sprays and Drops
There are many nasal sprays and drops that have an anti-inflammatory effect and help in blocking of Rhinitis. This is a better treatment than tablets but must be taken after carefully reading the instructions.
Some doctors would also recommend you to take tablets which treat hay fever. This provides a rapid relief but only for a short term. Make sure you do not take these tablets for a course of more than 10 days.
- Nasal Decongestants
Hay fever is often caused a blocked nose and this can be treated by using nasal decongestants. These decongestants help in reducing the nose blood vessels and thus make it possible for you to breathe easily.
